Shedding Martin Gustavsson and Jan Hietala 11 October to 11 November 2004

Shedding is the most recent collaboration between the Swedish artists Gustavsson and Hietala. Since their first collaboration in 1994, they have frequently made joint works throughout Scandinavia , while continuing their solo practice. Shedding emerged from the term ‘shedding skin’, and exists in a space between two reflecting wardrobe mirrors. The performative self is reinvented each time a person chooses to change clothes; a multiple identity is created through the outer layer of fabric. The video installation saw four distinct video projections onto four body sized glass panels that created a room within a room in the Project Space.

Gustavsson recently exhibited a major work Gospel in Stockholm, the last leg of a touring exhibition, featuring a series of highly acclaimed paintings. He has just returned from a solo show of new paintings for an exhibition in Kuwait City .

Hietala was the recent IASPIS artist in residence, and was represented at the international Book Art Biennial, in Alexandria . Hietala recently present his much acclaimed series of photographs Mirages at the Finnish Institute in Paris, as part of Mois de la photo.
